How to choose a clean whey protein in 2026
Walk into any supplement store and the wall of tubs looks the same. The difference between a good product and a mediocre one is on the label — if you know what to look for. 1. CHECK THE INGREDIENT LIST FIRST The ingredients are listed in order of weight. A clean whey will have the protein source first, with only what's needed after that. A long list of gums, colours, and flavour systems is a sign the product is doing more than delivering protein. Watch for 'proprietary blends' that hide how much of each ingredient you're getting. If a brand won't tell you what's in it, that's a choice. 2. LOOK AT PROTEIN PER SERVING A serving should give you at least 20g of protein. Some brands use a small scoop to make the 'servings per container' number look bigger. Compare protein per serving, not tub size. 3. KNOW YOUR CONCENTRATE FROM YOUR ISOLATE - Concentrate: 70-80% protein, small amounts of lactose and fat, usually better value. - Isolate: 90%+ protein, lower lactose, lower fat, tighter macros. Neither is inherently better. Pick based on your goals, budget, and digestion. 4. CHECK THE SWEETENER Many flavoured powders use artificial sweeteners or 'natural flavours' that can mean almost anything. If you want to avoid them, look for unflavoured options or products sweetened with stevia. Our Formula C is unflavoured; our cocoa formulas use stevia. 5. ASK ABOUT TESTING This is the step most people skip. Cheap powders have been found to contain heavy metals, melamine, or microbes. A brand that tests every batch and publishes the results has nothing to hide. We run seven tests on every batch — protein accuracy, amino acid profile, heavy metals, melamine, microbes, aflatoxins, and pesticide residues — and you can look up your batch on our Check Report page. 6. BEWARE OF PROTEIN SPIKING Some products add cheap amino acids (like glycine or taurine) or creatine to inflate the protein number on the label. A full amino acid profile test catches this. If a brand only quotes total protein and never shows the amino acid breakdown, ask why. 7. PRICE PER GRAM OF PROTEIN, NOT PER TUB A cheap tub with low protein per serving isn't a deal. Work out the cost per 20g of protein to compare products fairly. 8. TASTE AND MIXABILITY MATTER — BUT SECOND A powder that mixes clean and tastes fine is more likely to become a habit. But a great-tasting product with a poor label is still a poor product. Prioritise what's in it, then choose the one you'll actually use. 9. AVOID HYPERBOLE If a product promises extreme results, 'anabolic' effects, or transformation in a week, treat it with suspicion. Protein is a nutrient, not a drug. THE BOTTOM LINE A clean whey has a short ingredient list, a clear protein amount, transparent testing, and honest claims. It's not hard to find once you know what to check.
