Can you build muscle with plant protein?
For a long time, the received wisdom was that plant protein couldn't match whey for building muscle. The story has shifted as the research has improved. THE 'INCOMPLETE' MYTH It's true that most single plant protein sources are lower in one or more essential amino acids than whey. But you don't eat amino acids in isolation — you eat foods, and most people eat a mix across the day. Eating a variety of plant protein sources across meals gives you the full range of essential amino acids. You don't need to combine them in the same bite. WHAT THE STUDIES SHOW Several trials have compared whey and plant protein (often pea or soy) head-to-head for muscle growth in people doing resistance training. The results are closer than expected: when total protein intake is matched and adequate, plant protein supports muscle gain at a similar rate to whey. The key phrase is 'when total protein is matched and adequate'. If your plant protein serving is lower in protein or leucine, you may need a slightly larger serving to get the same effect. LEUCINE IS THE LEVER Leucine is the amino acid that triggers muscle protein synthesis. Whey is naturally high in leucine. Plant sources tend to be a bit lower, which is why some plant blends add leucine or use a mix of sources to compensate. Our Formula P blends fava bean protein with fermented yeast protein to deliver a complete amino acid profile, including enough leucine per serving to support muscle synthesis. DIGESTION AND ABSORPTION Whey digests quickly. Plant proteins can digest a little slower, which isn't necessarily a disadvantage — slower digestion means a steadier release of amino acids. For most people the difference is minor. WHO SHOULD CONSIDER PLANT PROTEIN? - Vegans and vegetarians who want a clean supplement. - People with dairy intolerance or milk allergy. - Anyone who finds whey causes bloating. - People who simply prefer plant-based products. WHO SHOULD STICK WITH WHEY? - People with no dairy issues who want the best value per gram of protein. - Those who want the fastest digestion post-workout. - Anyone who prefers the taste and texture of dairy-based powder. THE BOTTOM LINE You can build muscle with plant protein. The research supports it, provided you get enough total protein across the day and your source has a complete amino acid profile. The choice between whey and plant comes down to your diet, digestion, and preference — not a dramatic difference in results. To compare our whey and plant formulas, visit the shop.
